Bruce Welch's Shadowmania was by all accounts another good day. I didn't go this year due to other committments As ever my pal Chris writes a few words on his thoughts of the day.... To paraphrase a well-known advertising slogan: “The future’s bright, the future’s… The Foot Tappers!” The opening act at Shadowmania 2007 were fabulous and fully deserving of the standing ovation they received at the end of a set of tremendous variety from across the spectrum of the music which we all love.0 Highlights for me included the group’s performances of Temptation, Round and round and The Sound of silence whilst Little B was outstanding, Tim giving his own interpretation of a story which the drum solo aims to tell. That the group were given Riders in the sky to perform shows the high regard they are already held in and they were the best ‘new’ band I have ever seen perform at Shadowmania. An exceptional start from an outstanding group. I had some mixed feelings about the set from the Seaside Shadows. Some of the performances were excellent, particularly Angels and Here, there and everywhere although some of the others, I felt, didn’t grab the attention and enthusiasm of the audience: being more like background / cabaret music. They were nice to listen to (You got it, Ave Maria, Only a fool…) but perhaps a little out of place at a Shadows’ fans event, especially when the mood had been set with the previous lively set. The two Shadows’ tunes which the Seaside Shadows did play: Quatermaster’s stores and Bongo blues were performed to perfection. Next up were Legend, paying tribute to the Burns era, and including as personal highlights the performances of Main theme, Chattanooga choo choo, Friday on my mind and Bombay duck. I felt though that their set was a little too long (by my calculations it contained almost as many numbers as Bruce’s group!) and the last four or five tunes seemed a bit rushed through. As always, Brian Locking made a welcome guest appearance and included a final vocal You’re my best friend in addition to playing bass on numbers including Shindig and The rumble and harmonica on the ever popular Dakota which is one of my favourites – and always nice to hear performed in stereo! That this was The Rapiers ninth consecutive Shadowmania experience speaks for itself, and Bruce also commented later on in the evening how they had been “on fire”. Much of the set focused on the Shadows’ vocal hits and included Saturday dance, Be bop a lula and Baby my heart although my personal favourite was Gary (U.S.) Bonds’ hit Quarter to three. Special mention must also go to John Tuck’s immaculate performance of See you in my drums. The Jet Harris segment was the usual mix of humour and brilliant music. Theme from something really important has become a real favourite of mine from going to the ‘Me and my Shadows’ shows and other highlights today included Applejack and Nivram as well as the two Number Ones: Scarlett O’Hara and Diamonds. I mentioned earlier how the future’s bright but so too is the present with Jet and The Rapiers still touring and keeping alive the music of the Shadows. The present is also very much bright with the exceptional music from the final act: Bruce’s group, and this was the best I have heard them play. What an amazing variety their near two hour set had, ranging from the usual favourites of Dance on, Foot tapper, Going home and Equinoxe to gems including Live and let die, Cat ‘n’ mouse, Devoted to you and Don’t throw it all away. Shadowmanias usually throw up vocal highlights, and this time the highlight was Bruce singing Dialogue from a 1979 album of the same name by Michael Johnson. Only accompanied by Cliff Hall on keyboards you could have heard the proverbial pin drop during this spellbinding performance. Bruce had mentioned how very few songs paint such a vivid picture and the words from Dialogue are well worth Googling! There was a slight disappointment that the set hadn’t included my personal favourite Atlantis, and a much bigger disappointment that the onset of Wonderful land, Apache and FBI meant that Shadowmania 2007 had now come to a close although a happy note to finish on with Bruce confirming that we would all be back here again next year for number ten! (At the end of Diamonds Jet had also said “see you next time!”) |

The Daily Express newspaper reports more reunion rumours. "It has been known for some time that Cliff wants to celebrate the occasion" says a well-placed source. "But now he has persuaded Hank, Bruce and Brian to get together once more as Cliff and The Shadows". And it seems that he and his former band, who appeared in many of his films but stopped working together in 1968, anticipate serious demand for concerts. "The reunion will take the form of one or two nights at a major venue late next year rather than a theatre tour, to cope with the huge number of fans demanding such a get-together of the guys who effectively pioneered British rock'n'roll," the source explains. It remains to be seen if former member Jet Harris, who quit to go solo in the early 1960's, can be persuaded to come on board. "The Shadows view Jet as having left the group in 1962 but Cliff may persuade them to include him. Either way, without Tony Meehan, the drummer who died in 2005, we can never have the original Shadows line-up," the source added. |

Marty Wilde at the London Palladium with a few
'special guests'. Paul Maidment was there and here are his thoughts of what
was, by all accounts, a great night....
Some of the magic of last night is still
sinking in. I still cant believe some of it actually happened. The show
kicked off as the others have done with Marty coming straight on , after a
small introduction. After a few hits he introduces Jet. He cruises through
his set as only Jet can. He did omit Wonderful Land to make time for all the
guests. Three of the original Wildcats came on (Big Jim, Brian Bennett and
Licorice) to do Bad Boy. Great number! Kim Wilde and Roxanne Wilde both did
numbers with Marty. Kim really rocked the place with Kids In America (which
Marty co-wrote). Special mention for Roxanne who is clearly a great talent.
Justin Hayward from the Moody Blues came on and did a great acoustic Nights
In White Satin with Marty. Mr Wilde then started to do a few 'feel good'
numbers such as Only Sixteen. Summer Holiday was started and on walked
Bruce. Do you know who this is? asked Marty. Brian Bennett by now had made
his way behind the kit. Just as I was saying to my mate Eric, "if only Hank
came on", he bloody did!!! I was gob smacked. Move It has never sounded so
good. Just for that brief time, there they were. Hank ,Bruce, Brian with
Marty replacing Cliff (fine by me). All too soon they were gone. But we had
those precious few minutes. The finale also gave us time to say thanks to
all that appeared as they all came on. Marty, The Wildcats, Licorice
Locking, Jet, Hank, Bruce , Brian, Big Jim, Justin Hayward, Roxanne & Kym.
What a finale. All to soon it was over. The dvd will be a must. All that
talent for £23. Where could you get that? I managed to get a few things
signed by everyone that appeared. They all gave their time in the atrocious
weather. Good to see Eric, Paul, Kathy and Roy, and many others. What a
night!!!!!!!

I read this in The Daily Express newspaper today, - ".... Cliff Richard celebrates his 50th anniversary next year & he and his former backing band The Shadows are gearing up for a stage reunion. The 66-year-old peter pan of pop .... will be touring next year to make his half-century long career and what better way than to rejoin his old friends - surviving original Shads Hank Marvin Bruce Welch & Brian Bennett - with whom he first started recording back in fifties. "it's an idea that's floating around although nothing has been decided just yet" a spokesman for Cliff tells us, "but the anniversary is going to be time for a few fanfares." Well, we wait with 'baited breath' do we not... |
