Tony Hoffman & Andrew Lewis  - John Farrar, Music makes my day

Tony Hoffman (Shadsfax editor) produced a forty page fully illustrated story  of former Shadow and hit songwriter John Farrar.  Includes an in depth interview with John conducted by Andrew Lewis together with a full discography.  For details of how to obtain a copy click here.

Mike Read - The Story of The Shadows - The Shadows have been at the top of their professional for 25 years and have had  more hits in Britain than any other  British Group including The Beatles.  Hank Marvin. Bruce Welch, Jet Harris and Tony Meehan were spotted in 1958 in Soho's famous 2Is coffee bar by Cliff Richard's manager, and in 1960 Apache made them international stars in their own right.

Joined by a new drummer Brian Bennett in 1961, the group's film appearances with Cliff, continuing chart success and world tours combined to establish a popularity that even Beatlemania could not diminish.  And a '20 Golden Great' tour album released in 1977 and selling over a million copies in the UK alone bears witness to their extraordinary continuing appeal.

As told to TV and radio personality Mike Read, himself a great Shadows fan, The story of The Shadows who celebrate their Silver Jubilee in 1983, is one of the great popular music sensations of our time.

The book was subsequently reissued in 1984 in paperback version. The text is the same, but the page numbers are different (1983 edition 246 pages, 1984 edition 193 pages). This is because in the 1983 edition the pictures are given page numbers and there are a lot more of them, whereas in the 1984 edition the pictures are interleaved in the book without page numbering. Also, the 1983 edition has some pictures in colour, the 1984 edition doesn't.

Dezo Hoffman - Cliff Richard & The Shadows Around the world in pictures

Dezo Hoffman first photographed the phenomenal Cliff and The Shadows almost thirty years ago, back when Cliff's bad-boy act was considered too hot for TV and almost every buddy moody guitarist longed to pose in those heavy Hank M Marvin specs.

Their subsequent world-wide impact was captured, with candour and affection, by Hoffman, who had privileged access to them at work and at play, in Britain and abroad.  Here, for everyone who has ever been touched by their extraordinary talent, is the definitive photographic collection of the original Young Ones, past and present.

Royston Ellis & The original Shadows - The Shadows by Themselves

Published in 1961 by Consul in association with the Souvenir Press (paperback).  Twenty eight pages which includes 12 pages of personal stats, records released (including all those with Cliff), Shads' compositions and awards received. There's also 32 pages of black & white photographs - some of these we've seen since in other books and some we haven't. Curiously Hank's name is given as Hank Brian Marvin when in fact as we all probably know his real name is Brian Robson Rankin! It's a quick read and from a nostalgic point of view is a great bit of rock 'n' roll history. It doesn't have the depth of Mike Read's 'Story of The Shadows' or Bruce's 'Rock 'n' Roll - I gave you the best years of my life' but it's well worth a read and is a 'must' from the collector's point of view. Another interesting thing for a book written in 1961 is for Tony and Hank to discuss their musical equipment. Although he doesn't go into too much detail Hank spends three pages discussing his guitar, amp and echo unit and also advises on guitar maintenance. Consul also published Cliff's 'It's Great to be Young' which came out in 1960.

Fans might like to know this book was also "serialised" over three editions of Tony Hoffman's Shadsfax.

17 Watts - Mo Foster

"If there is a book that captured the essence of the dawn of rock music in the UK then this is it!"  Guitarist magazine

Brilliant book detailing the first days of British Rock and Roll told with many contributions from the players who were there, among them Eric Clapton, Lonnie Donegan, Hank Marvin, Andy Summers, Bert Weedon to name a few..!

Geoff Jermy  The Shadows in Australia

The 1987 edition.   ".....In 1984 when I began compiling this book, the idea was to portray the excellent media coverage given to The Shadows "Silver Anniversary" tour.  Since then the group has toured twice more, in 1985 and 1987, with publicity seemingly less  and less.  Obviously the impact has decreased, as the 1984 was their first  visit in 16 years. however I have included coverage of the last 2 tours to provide as wide a coverage of the 6 tours as possible.   ..... The result is simply a collection of press cuttings, brochures, photographs and other "memorabilia" sorted into each tour..."

Bruce Welch - Rock and Roll I gave you the best years of my life

First Published 1989.  Bruce in his own words.  A searingly honest autobiography and 'must read' for every Shadows Fan.

"In the spring of 1958 when I took my first tentative steps in the music business as a wide-eyed naive youngster, I expected my career to last for two or maybe three years, certainly no more.  I was out for a good time and music was just part of enjoying  myself.  Thirty years later - I am still playing.... My career has... given me fame, a nice lifestyle, money and all the trappings that follow success.  I have travelled the world through my ability to play three chords" -Bruce Welch

Abbey Road - Brian Southall, Peter Vince, Allan Rouse (1997 edition)

The story of the world's most famous recording studios. Very interesting book which amongst a plethora of other artistes  our very own Shadows.

Book originally came out in 1987 with a slightly different cover  but the updated version does include more colour photographs and has been updated.

Rob Bradford - Funny old World (John Henry Rostill)

First published in the 1990s.   Rob's privately printed book about John Rostill remains a firm favourite with fans worldwide.  The first print run of this book appeared in November 1988 and sold out within a few months.  A further 500 copy print run subsequently appeared in 1989 which also sold out.  However a few copies were taken by Leos Den and are I understand from Rob available from them.  Copies of this book does occasionally also surface on Ebay.    The author will he also  supply reasonable quality scans for the cost of £5.00.  Write to this Web Site's email address if you are interested in this and lll forward your email to Rob direct.

Foot Tapping, The Shadows 1958-1978, George Geddes

First published in 1978, the first incarnation of the book came in yellow livery.  The latter version   (white) came out in 1981.  Both volumes George tells me are long out of print but copies do sometimes appear on Ebay.  Worth seeking out ....
